The main map shows all the explored areas of the city. If a location is not currently visible (ie. no survivors nearby) you will not know how many zombies are there or how many other humans may have arrived since you'd seen it last.
If you have visited a location before you will know how much RESOURCES are present. Click the arrows under MAP in the top left corner to view what resources are present at all locations you have visited.
